Pakistan said late Thursday that Afghan Taliban forces opened unprovoked fire at multiple locations along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, prompting what it described as an “immediate and effective response” from its security forces. In a statement posted on social media platform X, the information ministry said the “Afghan Taliban regime miscalculated” by initiating fire across several points along the frontier.“

Afghan Taliban regime unprovoked action along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border [was] given an immediate and effective response,” the ministry said.It added that Taliban forces were being “delivered punishment” in the Chitral, Khyber, Mohmand, Kurram and Bajaur sectors, all bordering Afghanistan.

According to the statement, early reports indicated heavy casualties on the Afghan side, with multiple posts and equipment destroyed. There was no immediate confirmation from Afghan authorities, and AFP could not independently verify the claims.“Pakistan will take all necessary measures to ensure its territorial integrity and the safety and security of its citizens,” the ministry said. The latest clashes come less than a week after Pakistan said it had carried out overnight strikes on alleged militant camps and hideouts in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktika provinces. An initial official statement said “more than 80” militants were killed in the strikes, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry later told the Senate that reports suggested over 100 militants had been killed.

Pakistan said the strikes were conducted in response to a series of attacks inside the country, including a suicide bombing at an Islamabad imambargah and several attacks in Bannu and Bajaur during the holy month of Ramazan.

Tensions between Islamabad and Kabul have risen in recent months, with Pakistan accusing Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities of harbouring militants who carry out cross-border attacks — an allegation the Taliban government denies.
