Pakistan has reached a major milestone in its digital evolution, with total mobile subscriptions surpassing the 200 million mark. The achievement is set to be officially announced by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif during a national ceremony marking World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is organizing the event, which will also feature an update of official figures on the PTA’s platform. While the celebration was initially scheduled for today, it has been postponed due to the Prime Minister’s unavailability. The ceremony is now expected to take place on May 16 or 17, 2025, under the Prime Minister’s patronage.

As part of the festivities, PTA is partnering with licensed Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and Mobile Device Manufacturers (MDMs) to launch public-focused initiatives. On the day of the event, MNOs will offer free data and voice bundles to subscribers nationwide, recognizing the public’s role in achieving this digital milestone and encouraging broader digital access.

In addition, the PTA has invited Mobile Device Manufacturers to donate 10 to 15 mid-range smartphones for distribution to event attendees through a lucky draw. This gesture aims to highlight the industry’s commitment to digital inclusion and help bridge the connectivity gap in underserved communities.
