Pakistan’s government is preparing a new regulatory framework for incoming international calls as part of efforts to improve revenue collection, strengthen security oversight and enhance transparency in the telecom sector.

According to reports, international calls are currently routed through Long Distance and International (LDI) operators, and the ministry has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to develop a policy to regulate inbound call traffic.

Consultations with telecom companies and relevant institutions are ongoing, officials said, adding that the new framework will be finalized after the consultation process is completed.

Authorities said the proposed regulation aims to strengthen monitoring mechanisms for international call traffic, improve checks and balances within the system and enhance the sector’s revenue model, while supporting a more effective security framework.

Under the proposed system, local telecom operators and LDI companies are expected to take on an expanded operational role once the new regulations are implemented.
