The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a warning for more monsoon rains predicted from the evening of August 14 to August 18, with torrential rains expected from the night of August 14 to August 16.
The announcement was made in a press release dated August 12, 2024.
According to the Met Office, a low-pressure system currently causing rain over northwestern parts of India is likely to move towards central Pakistan, bringing strong moisture from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Additionally, a westerly wave is expected to approach the upper parts of the country on August 15.
Under the influence of these weather systems, various regions across Pakistan are expected to experience significant rainfall:
Kashmir: Rain-wind/thundershowers with heavy falls in areas such as Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, and Rawalakot from August 14 (evening/night) to August 18.
Punjab/Islamabad: Rain-wind/thundershowers with scattered heavy falls in cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Faisalabad from August 14 (evening/night) to August 18.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa: Rain-wind/thundershowers with scattered heavy falls in regions such as Chitral, Swat, and Peshawar from August 14 (evening/night) to August 18.
Balochistan: Rain-wind/thundershowers with isolated heavy falls in areas like Khuzdar, Lasbella, and Kalat from August 15 to August 18.
Sindh: Rain-wind/thundershowers at isolated places in regions including Mithi, Sanghar, and Sukkur from August 15 (evening/night) to August 18.
Gilgit-Baltistan: Mainly partly cloudy to cloudy weather with rainfall activity expected from August 15 (evening/night) to August 18.
The Met Office has also highlighted several possible impacts and issued advisories:Torrential rains may generate flash flooding in local nullahs/streams of Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Chitral, and other regions from August 14 (night) to August 16.
Heavy downpours may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, and other cities from August 14 (night) to August 16.
Landslides may cause road closures in vulnerable hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan during the wet period.
Windstorms and lightning may affect daily routines and damage weak structures like roofs of Kacha houses, electric poles, and billboards.
Farmers are advised to manage their activities according to the weather forecast. Travelers and tourists are advised to remain cautious and manage their travel plans to avoid any untoward situations.
