Pakistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed the country’s fifth Country Programme Framework (CPF), setting priorities for technical cooperation over 2026–2031.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the IAEA General Conference by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar and IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation Hua Liu.

According to the IAEA, a CPF provides the medium‑term roadmap for collaboration with a member state, defining where nuclear technology transfer and technical cooperation resources will be focused to support national development goals. For Pakistan, the 2026–2031 CPF identifies five priority areas:

  • Food and agriculture
  • Human health and nutrition
  • Climate change and water resource management
  • Nuclear power and radiation
  • Nuclear safety

The IAEA said its support will strengthen Pakistan’s capabilities in emergency preparedness, radioactive waste management, safe transport, and the use of artificial intelligence in regulation.

“This CPF reaffirms Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology,” Dr. Anwar said, as reported by Radio Pakistan.

Pakistan, an IAEA member since 1957, last signed a CPF covering 2020–2025 on September 17, 2019. The new framework extends and updates that cooperation for the next five years.
