The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) announced on Monday the commencement of operations at the New Gwadar International Airport (NGIAP), putting to rest earlier rumors of delays caused by rain. In a statement issued from its headquarters at Jinnah International Airport, Karachi, the PAA urged the public to disregard unverified reports and rely on trusted sources for accurate updates.

Located in the Grandani area of Gwadar district, Balochistan, the airport spans 4,300 acres and has been developed at an estimated cost of $246 million. The project was funded by Pakistan, China, the Sultanate of Oman, and the Pakistan Airports Authority. Construction began in November 2019, and the airport was completed in December 2024.

The state-of-the-art facility is equipped to handle 400,000 passengers annually and features a 3.6-kilometer runway capable of accommodating large aircraft, including Boeing 747s and Airbus A380s. The airport also boasts advanced air traffic control systems, modern navigational aids, enhanced security measures, and passenger-friendly amenities.

As a flagship project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the New Gwadar International Airport is expected to play a pivotal role in driving economic growth, improving regional connectivity, and fostering stronger ties between Pakistan and its neighbors. The airport is seen as a critical step in transforming Gwadar into a regional trade and logistics hub.
