Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Rashid Mahmood Langrial, has asked for the asset details from all Grade-17 to 22 officers within the Inland Revenue Service (IRS) and Pakistan Customs Service.

The tax authorities have instructed the FBR Member Administration to compile and provide the asset information for these IRS and customs officers. The FBR currently employs over 20,000 individuals in BS-17 to BS-22, including 1,275 officials in the Inland Revenue Service and approximately 600 in the Pakistan Customs Service.

Officers from the Inland Revenue Service and Customs regularly submit their asset details alongside their income tax returns each year.

In contrast, officers from other civil service cadres rarely file income tax returns or asset details with the Establishment Division, despite annual directives from the human resource department to all departments at the start of each fiscal year.

Meanwhile, the FBR has not conducted audits of civil servants’ assets for the past five years, citing capacity issues within the tax department. It is noteworthy that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has been pressing Pakistan to publicly disclose the assets of civil servants
