The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has issued an early alert regarding a developing low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea, which could potentially escalate into a tropical storm. Early forecasts indicate the storm’s possibility to land on the Pakistani coastline in the third week of October, contingent on its trajectory and intensity.
According to a statement from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the system is currently located near the Lakshadweep Valley and is projected to move northwestward.
The NDMA warned that the low-pressure system might evolve into a fully-fledged tropical cyclone, posing a threat to Pakistan’s coastal regions.
The authority has advised citizens, especially those in coastal areas, to remain vigilant and stay updated with official advisories and updates regarding the evolving situation. The NDMA is actively monitoring the system in collaboration with relevant departments to ensure proactive measures are in place for any potential emergencies.
This alert follows the formation of Cyclone Asna in the Arabian Sea in August, which, although it veered away from Pakistan’s coastline, resulted in heavy rains across Sindh and Balochistan. The NDMA’s current efforts aim to mitigate similar impacts should the new system develop into a cyclone.
