A fire that had been burning for 18 days in a gas pit in Karachi has mysteriously extinguished itself without any external intervention. The blaze, which began on March 29 during water boring operations on an empty plot belonging to a private housing society near Korangi Crossing, suddenly died out.

Despite the fire’s extinguishment, gas continues to leak from the pit, creating potential safety concerns. The smell of gas has permeated the surrounding area, prompting authorities to restrict access to prevent health and safety hazards.

Officials monitoring the site report that the pressure of the gas emerging from the pit remains unchanged, indicating that while the fire has stopped, the underlying issue causing the gas leak persists.

The site has been under close observation since the incident was first reported last month. Multiple agencies have been involved in investigating the unusual occurrence. Officials from the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission surveyed the area, while teams from Pakistan Petroleum Limited and other oil sector entities have been assessing the site to determine the cause of the fire.

Mineral tests were also carried out as part of the comprehensive investigation to understand the nature of the gas and the geological conditions that may have contributed to the incident.
