The winter snow season in Murree is set to officially begin on December 15, 2024, and will continue until March 15, 2025. During this period, a “rain and snow emergency” will be enforced to ensure the safety of tourists and smooth operations in the region.
The tourist influx is expected to peak starting December 24, coinciding with the winter school vacations. To prepare for the season, Rawalpindi Commissioner Aamir Khattak has directed that all safety and security arrangements be finalized by December 10.
Preparations and Resources
Murree Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Shirazi has requested 100 additional volunteers and a budget of Rs. 17 million to meet operational needs during the busy season. Nineteen facility centers will be established at key locations, including the Motorway Toll Plaza and GT Road Toll Plaza, to guide tourists and manage vehicle entries. These centers will operate 24/7 and will be equipped with essentials such as raincoats, heaters, and mobile phones.
To prevent overcrowding, vehicles will be redirected once Murree reaches its capacity.
Traffic and Road Safety
Traffic management will be a key focus, with 50 additional officers deployed to ensure smooth vehicle flow. Coordination with the National Highway Authority (NHA) and the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) will help maintain road safety. Hourly weather updates will also be provided once snowfall begins to keep tourists informed.
Tourist Guidelines and Price Regulation
Tourists are advised to travel with essential items such as tire chains, blankets, and dry food to prepare for potential delays or emergencies. To prevent overcharging, hotel rents, transport fares, and food prices have been regulated under Section 144. Ten price control magistrates will monitor compliance to ensure fair pricing throughout the snow season.
