The iconic Monal Restaurant, situated in the hills of Margalla, Islamabad, has announced that it will be shutting its doors permanently on September 11, 2024.
This decision comes in compliance with a recent Supreme Court ruling mandating the removal of all restaurants operating within Islamabad’s Margalla National Park.
In a message to its customers on social media, Monal Islamabad expressed gratitude for the support and recognition it has received since its inception in 2006.
“It was an absolute pleasure for the Monal family to serve and showcase a positive image of Pakistan and its beautiful people,” the statement read. The restaurant acknowledged the emotional journey and success stories shared with its customers over the years, marking the closure as a “difficult farewell.”

The Supreme Court’s decisive order emerged from a case concerning the legality of commercial establishments within the national park.
The court emphasized the need to protect the park’s natural environment, ruling that all restaurants must be removed within three months. Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa criticized the Capital Development Authority (CDA) for its handling of the matter and demanded a detailed report on all constructions within the park.
Monal Restaurant had voluntarily assured the court of its compliance with the three-month deadline. The court has also directed the relocation of all other restaurants established in the national park area within the same period, declaring all existing leases null and void.
The closure of Monal marks the end of an era for the restaurant, which has been a significant part of Islamabad’s culinary and a tourist landscape.
