The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony has called upon the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to take immediate action against objectionable and blasphemous content on social media platforms. In a letter addressed to the PTA, the ministry expressed deep concerns about the availability of such material, stressing the need for swift removal to uphold the country’s moral and religious standards.
Expressing alarm over Pakistan’s high engagement with online pornographic content, the ministry highlighted its damaging impact on public morality and societal well-being. Citing this trend as especially concerning, the ministry emphasized the importance of addressing the moral and social consequences associated with unrestricted access to such material. This concern has spurred the ministry’s call for urgent intervention from the PTA.
Despite previous proactive measures by the PTA, including blocks on pornographic content as directed by the Supreme Court, the ministry observed that explicit and blasphemous material remains accessible across several online platforms. This lingering availability, the ministry argues, runs counter to Pakistan’s cultural and religious values and calls into question the effectiveness of existing content filtering measures.
The ministry’s letter further highlighted the adverse impact of this content on young people in particular, stating that unrestricted access poses a serious risk to their moral development and values. The ministry noted that the widespread availability of such content can shape the attitudes and behaviors of younger generations, urging the PTA to make a more concerted effort in blocking this content completely.
