Services of WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, owned by Meta, were disrupted globally, including in Pakistan, causing inconvenience to millions of users. The outage began around 10:58 PM on Wednesday, affecting users’ ability to access the platforms and their services for several hours before being partially restored.

According to the outage tracking platform Downdetector, over 22,000 users reported issues with Facebook, while more than 18,000 encountered disruptions on WhatsApp. Instagram users also reported being unable to access or update content, with over 70,000 incidents recorded at the peak of the outage. Users shared screenshots on X (formerly Twitter), showing error messages such as “Something went wrong.”

Meta confirmed the disruption through a post on X, stating, “Thanks for bearing with us! We’re 99% of the way there – just doing some last checks. We apologize to those who’ve been affected by the outage.” However, Facebook has not officially confirmed if all services have been fully restored. The company’s status dashboard indicated that technical issues also affected the API for WhatsApp Business.

This outage adds to a series of disruptions faced by Meta-owned platforms in recent months. A similar incident in March impacted thousands of users globally, while another in October saw services restored within an hour. These outages highlight the increasing dependency on Meta’s ecosystem, which serves approximately 3.19 billion daily active users worldwide.

While Downdetector’s user-submitted reports provide insights into the scale of such disruptions, the actual number of affected users remains uncertain. As services gradually return to normal, many users continue to express their frustrations and seek clarity from the social media giant on the root causes and measures to prevent future outages.
