For the first time in 77 years, the Khunjerab Pass has been made operational year-round, enabling uninterrupted trade between Pakistan, China, and the Central Asian Republics (CARs). This historic development marks a significant milestone in regional connectivity and economic integration.
The Khunjerab Pass, a critical trade route linking Gilgit-Baltistan with China, plays a vital role in the flagship China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. The initiative aims to enhance trade and connectivity between China, Pakistan, and CARs, fostering economic growth across the region.
The pass facilitates the movement of goods such as machinery, textiles, electronics, and food products, benefiting the economies of neighboring countries. Pakistan has also used this route to export industrial and agricultural products to CARs, including Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. The all-weather opening of the Khunjerab Pass is expected to further strengthen economic ties between Pakistan and China while boosting regional trade and integration.
Historically, the pass was only operational from April to November due to heavy snowfall and harsh winter conditions, limiting cross-border trade to just seven months a year. Recognizing the need for uninterrupted trade, the leadership of Pakistan and China, during the Third Belt and Road Forum in 2023, committed to making the Khunjerab Pass operational year-round. Both countries pledged to enhance infrastructure and improve passage conditions to ensure the smooth flow of goods.
In line with this commitment, the National Logistics Corporation (NLC) has implemented comprehensive measures at Sost Dry Port to support cross-border trade. These include the installation of a central heating system and other facilities for officials and traders, ensuring efficient trade operations throughout the year. Additionally, large-scale plans have been developed to increase imports, exports, and transit trade through Pakistan.
The year-round opening of the Khunjerab Pass is expected to significantly boost regional trade, strengthen economic ties between China and Pakistan, and unlock new opportunities for economic integration with Central Asia.
