In a decisive move against the illegal manipulation of mobile phone IMEIs and the sale of cloned devices, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Zonal Office Karachi, in collaboration with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Karachi, has carried out two targeted raids in the city.
The operations were conducted at a mobile repair shop in Saima Mobile Mall on Rashid Minhas Road and at Rafique Mobile Shopping Center in Quaidabad. During the raids, authorities seized laptops, desktop computers, and specialized software allegedly used for IMEI tampering. Three suspects were apprehended on the spot and are currently in NCCIA custody as legal proceedings continue.
The PTA reiterated its strict zero-tolerance policy towards the illegal trade and manipulation of mobile device identifiers. The authority emphasized that IMEI tampering and the distribution of cloned phones pose significant risks to national security and public safety, facilitating cybercrimes, financial fraud, abductions, and other illicit activities.
The PTA has called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to phone cloning or tampering. The agency warned that offenders will face severe legal consequences under strengthened regulatory measures.
