Federal Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Rightsizing of the Federal Government, where significant progress on streamlining federal ministries was reviewed.
The Ministry of Railways presented a comprehensive update on its rightsizing initiatives, revealing that 17,101 out of 95,859 sanctioned posts have already been abolished, with an additional 5,695 positions currently in the process of being eliminated. Furthermore, the ministry plans to cut 15,000 more posts in the near future as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency and optimize resources.
The presentation emphasized measures to modernize Pakistan Railways by aligning its functions with its core mandate and reducing redundant positions. Discussions highlighted the importance of improving operational efficiency and ensuring the ministry’s long-term effectiveness. The committee decided to forward the matter to the Sub-Committee on Rightsizing for further review and implementation of the proposed measures.
The Establishment Division also updated the committee, reporting confirmations from 29 ministries and one constitutional body regarding the abolition of 11,877 posts, along with 4,660 “dying” posts. The finance minister praised the progress made by the ministries and departments, commending their efforts to implement the committee’s decisions.
