In a surprising move, the federal cabinet has taken a U-turn by revoking its decision on the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) rules, which would have empowered the agency to take action against cybercrime actors, propaganda, harassment, and individuals spreading rumors on social media. This decision follows a recommendation from the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Affairs.

Sources have informed that the Interior Ministry has officially communicated the cabinet’s decision to the Ministry of IT. As a result, the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) cybercrime wing was reactivated, just a day after it was abolished.

The NCCIA was initially established by the caretaker government in December 2023 to coordinate with international organizations and combat cybercrime. However, with the recent revocation of its rules, the responsibility for addressing cybercrime issues now returns to the FIA’s cybercrime wing.
