The federal government is preparing to eliminate the Rs. 35 monthly Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) fee that is currently charged to all electricity consumers across Pakistan.
A formal proposal has been drafted to abolish this surcharge, which affects domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers alike. The plan is scheduled to be presented to the Prime Minister during a high-level meeting next week.
The PTV fee currently generates approximately Rs. 1.5 billion monthly from around 42.6 million electricity consumers nationwide. PTV, which operates nine television channels and employs over 6,000 staff, has historically relied on this electricity surcharge as a significant funding source.
Government officials indicated this move is part of broader efforts to remove outdated or unjustified charges from electricity bills, providing relief to consumers while potentially signaling a shift in the public broadcaster’s funding model.
