In response to the ongoing energy crisis, the government has introduced strict austerity measures under the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, supported by a newly developed digital monitoring system designed to oversee implementation across public institutions.
The Ministry of Information Technology, in collaboration with the National IT Board (NITB), has launched a centralized digital dashboard that enables authorities to track compliance with fuel conservation policies in real time.
The platform provides daily updates on petrol consumption reduction efforts and closely monitors the nationwide availability of petroleum products. By offering live data on fuel reserves, the system allows policymakers to evaluate supply conditions and take timely corrective action to prevent shortages.
Senior officials said the dashboard allows the prime minister to directly review ministry-level performance related to energy conservation. It records fuel usage across government offices, monitors official vehicle operations, and evaluates departmental adherence to efficiency targets.
As part of austerity measures, the decision to ground 60 percent of government vehicles is being monitored through the system to ensure effective enforcement. The dashboard also flags institutions failing to comply with conservation directives while presenting measurable progress toward energy-saving goals.
Authorities believe the initiative will enhance transparency, improve accountability, and accelerate decision-making through data-driven governance. The system additionally compares fuel demand and supply patterns across different cities and assesses the overall impact of government interventions aimed at stabilizing the energy situation.
All federal ministries have been connected to the dashboard on the prime minister’s instructions, while integration of provincial governments is underway. Officials noted that future policy decisions, including possible smart lockdowns, will rely heavily on energy consumption trends captured by the platform, making it a key component of the government’s strategy to manage the crisis.
