Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari has lauded the National Grid Company’s indigenization policy, stating that it has generated significant savings while strengthening Pakistan’s industrial base.

According to the minister, contracts worth Rs12.673 billion have been awarded to local industries under this initiative. He noted that the use of locally manufactured transmission line conductors has reduced costs by nearly 40% compared to imported alternatives.

The policy promotes domestic production through mechanisms such as educational orders, joint ventures with international partners, and the development of local subsidiaries. So far, nine educational orders worth Rs900 million have been issued, while 11 local firms have been registered for capability development.

Leghari added that the shift towards local manufacturing is helping conserve foreign exchange and improve project timelines, as domestically produced materials enable faster completion of transmission infrastructure projects.

He further said that indigenization is expected to boost export potential in sectors like steel, cables, and conductors, reaffirming the government’s commitment to reducing import dependence and strengthening long-term economic resilience.
