The federal government is deliberating the possibility of a “smart lockdown” as mounting regional tensions raise concerns over a potential fuel shortage.
A high-level meeting scheduled for later today between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari is expected to determine the country’s next course of action.
The session will also be attended by senior officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, along with key members of the finance and petroleum ministries. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is also set to join the discussions.
Sources indicate that authorities will receive a comprehensive briefing on the feasibility of implementing targeted restrictions nationwide to manage the evolving situation.
The proposed measures are being considered to ensure stability at home while addressing challenges stemming from heightened geopolitical tensions.
Diplomatic angle under review
In addition to domestic measures, the leadership will review Pakistan’s diplomatic stance, including its offer to mediate in the ongoing tensions involving the United States and Iran. Officials are expected to evaluate options to support de-escalation efforts.
Meanwhile, the Sindh government has already taken precautionary steps. It has announced a work-from-home policy for Friday and approved a decision for cabinet members to forgo three months’ salaries as part of austerity measures.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon stated that the province would fully support any federal decisions aimed at preventing fuel shortages. He added that further steps would continue until the situation stabilizes, including the enforcement of a nationwide lockdown if required.
