In a significant move to streamline its administrative structure, the federal government has abolished 6,770 positions across various ministries, divisions, and departments. This decision, part of a broader right-sizing policy, was approved by the federal cabinet on August 27, 2024.
The restructuring includes the elimination of 4,816 positions from Grade 1 to Grade 22, with an additional 1,954 positions declared as “dying.” These dying positions, which will not be filled once vacated, primarily affect lower and mid-level posts, including 578 in Grade-1.
The abolished positions span the entire spectrum of the federal workforce, including two in Grade-22 and 22 in Grade-20, along with reductions across other grades. The cuts include 4,360 non-gazetted and 456 gazetted posts, reflecting a comprehensive approach to reducing government expenditure and improving efficiency.
The Establishment Division has directed all ministries and divisions to implement the cabinet’s directive, marking a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to optimize its operations and reduce costs.
