Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced late Friday that the federal government has decided to keep the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel unchanged for another week, offering temporary relief to consumers.
Under the latest decision, the price of Motor Spirit (petrol) will remain at Rs. 321.17 per litre, while high-speed diesel (HSD) will continue to be sold at Rs. 335.86 per litre. The revised rates came into effect from Saturday, March 21, 2026.
The prime minister stated that maintaining current prices will come at a significant fiscal cost, with the government expected to absorb approximately Rs. 45 billion to avoid passing the burden on to the public.
This move follows a sharp increase in fuel prices earlier this month, when petrol and diesel rates were raised by Rs. 55 per litre each amid global market volatility triggered by the ongoing Gulf conflict.
Despite the latest relief, fuel pricing has remained volatile. Over the last four review cycles, the government has raised fuel prices twice, reflecting the ongoing pressure from international oil markets.
The decision to hold prices steady highlights the government’s effort to balance public relief with mounting economic challenges, as global energy uncertainty continues to impact domestic pricing policies.
