The federal government has revised the billing system for consumers generating electricity through solar panels, removing all credits for electricity produced beyond approved limits.
Under the new rules, an Export MDI (Maximum Demand Indicator) check will now be applied to solar connections. Consumers who install additional panels beyond their approved generation license will no longer receive any billing relief for the extra electricity exported to the grid.
Electricity distribution companies have been instructed to treat all excess electricity as “zero units”, meaning that energy produced beyond the units approved under the net metering policy will not be credited to the consumer’s account.
According to officials, the move is aimed at ensuring transparency in billing and strict compliance with agreements, while maintaining balance between solar system production and utility billing.
