An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission is set to visit Pakistan from November 11-15 to engage in discussions on climate financing, budgeting, and economic performance. This visit aims to address key financial and environmental challenges facing the country.

Pakistan is seeking to negotiate $1 billion in climate financing to tackle pressing environmental issues. The discussions will also focus on Pakistan’s commitment to generating 60 percent of its energy from alternative sources by 2030, a significant step towards sustainable development.

The agenda for the IMF mission includes a comprehensive review of Pakistan’s budget targets and fiscal performance, alongside an evaluation of environmental policies under the National Clean Air Policy. The IMF team will assess the progress on implementing Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards, as well as Pakistan’s efforts in pollution control and the promotion of green energy.

Additionally, the mission will receive updates on the Billion Tree Tsunami project, initiatives to reduce environmental pollution, and policies aimed at banning the burning of crop residue. These measures are part of Pakistan’s broader strategy to enhance environmental sustainability.

The Finance Division is expected to provide updates on first-quarter budget targets, revenue collection by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), and the circular debt management plan for the current fiscal year. These updates will form a crucial part of the discussions, offering insights into Pakistan’s economic strategies and challenges.

While the IMF mission will assess the current economic situation, the first economic review under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program is scheduled for early 2025. This visit marks an important step in Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to secure international support for its economic and environmental initiatives.
