Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has confirmed that record-breaking temperatures were recorded today in the northern towns of Chilas and Bunji in Gilgit-Baltistan. According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre (NWFC), Chilas experienced an unprecedented 48.5°C, surpassing its previous highest temperature of 47.7°C recorded on July 17, 1997.

Similarly, Bunji recorded a sweltering 46.1°C, breaking its earlier record of 45.6°C set on July 12, 1971.The PMD has warned that such persistent and extreme temperatures could speed up snow and glacier melt in the northern regions, increasing the likelihood of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and flash floods in vulnerable valleys over the coming week. A GLOF alert issued by PMD on July 4, 2025, already cautioned residents and authorities about heightened risks due to ongoing heatwaves in the area.

Authorities have urged local administrations to stay vigilant and take preventive measures in high-risk zones.Let me know if you want a version in Urdu or need this adapted for a broadcast script or social media.
