In a landmark decision, the federal cabinet has approved the promotion of Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of Field Marshal, following Pakistan’s decisive victory in Operation Bunyān Marsūs. The move comes as the nation celebrates the successful defense against an unprovoked attack by India on the night of May 6 and 7, 2025—a conflict that marked one of the most challenging chapters in Pakistan’s history.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his congratulations to the nation, lauding the exemplary strategy and courageous leadership that led to the defeat of the enemy and the protection of Pakistan’s sovereignty. The cabinet highlighted that General Asim Munir’s outstanding command and coordination of the armed forces were instrumental in achieving this historic success, despite the enemy’s attempts to target innocent civilians and violate Pakistan’s territorial integrity.

In recognition of his exceptional military leadership, valor, and unwavering commitment to the nation’s defense, the Prime Minister’s proposal to elevate General Munir to Field Marshal was unanimously approved by the cabinet. President Asif Ali Zardari was also briefed on the decision in a meeting with the Prime Minister.

Additionally, the government has decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, acknowledging his continued service to the country. The cabinet further resolved to honor officers, soldiers, veterans, martyrs, and civilians who contributed to Operation Bunyān Marsūs with top state awards, recognizing their invaluable services during this critical period.
