MNA Hamza Shahbaz has called a high-level briefing on Pakistan’s proposed five-year auto policy, with officials from the Ministry of Industries and Production set to present the draft on Wednesday, sources said.
Hamza Shahbaz, son of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, will be briefed on the proposed automotive strategy as the government moves closer to finalising the policy.
Policy to Be Shared With IMF This Week
The briefing comes after the Prime Minister gave in-principle approval to the proposed auto policy.
The government plans to share the draft with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) later this week. Earlier discussions with the lender had stalled over objections to the draft policy.
IMF, Cabinet and Parliament Approval Still Required
After receiving the IMF’s clearance, the policy will be submitted to the Federal Cabinet for approval and then placed before Parliament for final legislative approval.
The framework must therefore clear three stages before it can come into force: the IMF, the Cabinet and Parliament.
What It Could Mean for Car Buyers
The policy is being closely watched by car buyers because it is expected to revise vehicle taxes and duties, potentially lowering prices across different categories.
However, no changes to existing vehicle taxes or prices will take effect until the policy completes the approval process.
