US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Washington’s closer relationship with Pakistan could give the United States greater influence over Islamabad’s decisions on various issues.

Rubio made the remarks during a joint interview with India Today alongside US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. The interview was recorded on October 22 at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai.

What Rubio Said About Pakistan

During the interview, Rubio was asked how Washington would ensure that its growing ties with Pakistan would not undermine India’s efforts to combat terrorism.

Rubio said the United States had a long-standing relationship with Pakistan, which had developed in a way that could allow Washington to exert greater influence over decisions made by Islamabad.

He said the United States sought relations with as many countries as possible because of its global responsibilities and interests.

Rubio also stressed that closer ties with Pakistan would not come at the expense of Washington’s relationship with New Delhi. He said the United States shared India’s concerns about terrorism.

His remarks about gaining greater influence over Pakistan have since attracted attention on social media.

Rubio Discusses US Role in India-Pakistan Tensions

Rubio also discussed Washington’s role during the India-Pakistan conflict last year, saying the United States drew on its established relationship with India and its improving ties with Pakistan to help prevent the situation from escalating into a wider war.

He said Washington preferred to see the two countries avoid conflict and build stronger partnerships through business and trade.

The comments come as US engagement with Pakistan has expanded this year, including discussions about potential American investment in Pakistan’s artificial intelligence sector.

Rubio’s remarks highlight Washington’s stated intention to maintain relations with both countries while seeking to use its diplomatic ties to influence regional developments.
