Pakistan is looking to attract American investment in its mining industry, with opportunities in Balochistan’s mineral sector discussed during talks between Pakistani and US officials in Islamabad.

The matter came up at a meeting on October 20 between Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A. Baker, as the two countries explored ways to deepen trade and economic ties, according to the Commerce Division.

The US delegation expressed interest in expanding investment and technical cooperation in Pakistan’s mineral sector. However, officials did not disclose any proposed mining projects, investment amounts or commitments from American companies.

The talks also covered wider industrial opportunities in Pakistan. Jam Kamal highlighted Hub in Balochistan as a potential location for manufacturing facilities, industrial investment and special economic zones.

Agriculture and food processing were also on the agenda, including opportunities to develop higher-value products from Balochistan’s dates and olive oil. The minister encouraged US businesses to explore investment in modern farming, processing facilities and cold-chain infrastructure.

The meeting took place as Pakistan and the United States continued negotiations on a proposed bilateral trade agreement. Commerce Secretary Jawad Paul said discussions had progressed, but some technical provisions still required further negotiations with the Office of the United States Trade Representative.

Pakistan also pressed for improved access to the US market for its mangoes and dates, while the two sides discussed increasing Pakistani imports of American cotton and soybeans.

The discussions indicate interest in expanding commercial ties beyond existing trade, but the proposed trade agreement remains under negotiation. No final deal or specific investment arrangement was announced.
