The federal government has ordered the installation of modern fire safety systems in government buildings across Islamabad following the deaths of 14 newborns in the PIMS fire, sources told RBN.
The Secretaries Committee approved the measure on Tuesday, directing ministries and government divisions to install fire alarms, sprinklers and other required safety equipment in buildings where such facilities are currently missing.
Secretary Cabinet told this scribe that the new systems would be installed in federal government buildings that do not have adequate fire protection arrangements.
The decision follows the August 26 fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), where 14 newborn babies died after a fire broke out in the nursery on the third floor of the Mother and Child Health Ward.
According to reports, 15 infants were in the nursery when the fire occurred, while only one survived.
The incident raised serious concerns about fire safety and emergency response arrangements at the hospital. Investigations identified gaps in fire alarms and sprinkler systems, while the availability of emergency exits and response procedures also came under scrutiny.
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has since stepped up action against buildings that fail to meet fire and life-safety standards in Islamabad.
Several buildings have been sealed over safety violations, including the Shaheed-i-Millat Building, State Life Building, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan Building and Beverly Center. Parts of two hotels in Blue Area were also reportedly sealed.
The CDA also fined PIMS, Polyclinic and its own Capital Hospital Rs500,000 each for failing to meet fire and life-safety requirements.
Sources said the CDA will help identify government buildings requiring fire protection upgrades and monitor compliance with the safety requirements.
Separately, the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on National Health Services has raised questions about fire safety, emergency preparedness, electrical and oxygen systems, and staff training at PIMS. The committee has also called for action against those found responsible for the tragedy.
