At least two people were killed and 94 others injured in celebratory aerial firing ahead of Pakistan’s Independence Day, officials said on Friday.

Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed said the injured were treated at three major hospitals. Civil Hospital received 17 people, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital 24, while 53 were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

According to Syed, a man from PIB Colony and an infant died after being caught in aerial firing incidents. A woman who arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound also died later. Police said her death was caused by accidental firing.

Edhi had earlier recorded 86 injuries from aerial firing, involving 59 men, 17 children and 10 women.

Firing incidents were reported across several areas, including Lyari, Saddar, Korangi, Malir, Azizabad, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulbahar, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Orangi Town, Jamshed Quarters and Defence.

Police launched arrests to curb the practice. In the East district, 10 suspects were detained from different areas and weapons allegedly used in aerial firing were recovered.

The arrests took place within the jurisdictions of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Sharea Faisal, Sachal, Gulistan-i-Johar and SITE Super Highway police stations.

Three more suspects were arrested by police in the West district in connection with aerial firing.

Celebratory gunfire remains a recurring issue during Independence Day festivities despite repeated bans and enforcement measures. Last year, three people, including a minor girl, were killed and more than 100 injured in similar incidents.
