Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to speed up Pakistan’s transition toward electric vehicles as part of a broader strategy to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on conventional fuels.

Chairing a high-level meeting on energy planning, the prime minister emphasized that moving the transport sector toward cleaner electric energy is now essential for long-term national policy.

He instructed that future government transport purchases should focus exclusively on electric buses and motorcycles, marking a clear shift in procurement priorities toward electrification.

The meeting also reviewed progress on supporting infrastructure, with the prime minister calling for rapid expansion of electric vehicle charging stations to facilitate wider public adoption across the country.

Officials were further directed to develop a comprehensive framework to promote battery storage systems, particularly to store excess electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar power.

In addition, the prime minister urged steps to encourage local manufacturing of advanced batteries to reduce import dependency and strengthen domestic industrial capacity.

During the briefing, it was noted that work is underway on two pilot projects involving grid-level battery storage, which are expected to help integrate energy storage solutions into Pakistan’s power system.
