Pakistan played a decisive last-minute role in preventing a major escalation in the Middle East after Iran appeared ready to retaliate against Israeli strikes on Lebanon. Tehran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh confirmed that Pakistan intervened at a critical moment, relaying messages that the United States would ensure Israeli restraint.

The ceasefire, which had been under threat, was preserved for now, though tensions remain high. Officials highlighted disagreements over whether Lebanon was included in the truce framework, with Iran insisting it was, while the U.S. and Israel disagreed.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance described the issue as a “legitimate misunderstanding,” acknowledging Iran’s interpretation of the ceasefire. Pakistan’s swift diplomacy appears to have de-escalated a situation that could have triggered renewed conflict, earning Islamabad recognition as a pivotal mediator in the region.
