US President Donald Trump has ignited fresh controversy after suggesting that the United States could reconsider its membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, criticizing the alliance for failing to support Washington during tensions linked to Iran.

In an interview published by The Telegraph, Trump said he had long questioned NATO’s strength and effectiveness, claiming the alliance did not act when it mattered most. He argued that NATO’s response to the crisis reinforced his belief that the bloc lacks real strategic power — a perception he said is shared by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump also voiced frustration over the continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing allies of failing to assist efforts aimed at restoring maritime access after Iran allegedly blocked the vital shipping route.

The US leader maintained that allied support in such situations should be automatic rather than negotiated through prolonged diplomacy.

He further criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, questioning the United Kingdom’s military readiness and arguing that the British Royal Navy lacked the operational capability to play a decisive role in the Middle East conflict.

The remarks have intensified debate over the future of Western security cooperation and raised concerns among global allies about the long-term stability of the transatlantic defense alliance.
