The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has released the draft of its new electronic income tax return forms for individuals and companies, set to take effect for the tax year 2025. The forms, introduced via S.R.O. 1212 (I)/2025 and S.R.O. 1213(I)/2025 on Tuesday, are part of a broader effort to update the country’s tax filing process.

In a move that may raise eyebrows among taxpayers, the so-called “Simplified Electronic Return for Individuals” spans a formidable 25 pages, prompting some to question just how “simple” the process will be.

Alongside the individual return, the FBR has also issued a draft income tax return form for companies. The changes are being proposed under the authority of section 237 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, with amendments to the Income Tax Rules, 2002, outlined in S.R.O. 1213(I)/2025.

The FBR has published these drafts to invite feedback from stakeholders. Anyone affected by the proposed changes has seven days from the date of publication in the official Gazette to submit objections or suggestions. The FBR has assured that all feedback received within this window will be considered before the new forms and rules are finalized.

Taxpayers and professionals are encouraged to review the drafts and make their voices heard before the “simplified” process becomes the new normal.
