The federal cabinet has given the green light for the import of 500,000 tons of sugar through the government sector in a bid to stabilize domestic prices, the Ministry of Food Security announced on Monday.
According to the ministry, all necessary arrangements for the import have been finalized, and implementation is already underway to ensure swift delivery.
Officials emphasized that the current import strategy is more effective than previous methods, which often resulted in artificial shortages and placed a heavy subsidy burden on the national exchequer.
The ministry noted that the government had previously permitted sugar exports when domestic supplies were ample. Now, with the market facing price pressures, the decision to import sugar aims to maintain stability and protect consumers from further price hikes.
