The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory stating that monsoon rains are likely to intensify across various parts of the country starting from the evening of July 5. The latest advisory, issued by the National Weather Forecasting Centre, warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall with potential flash floods, urban flooding, and landslides in vulnerable areas.

According to the PMD, moist currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously penetrating the atmosphere, and a westerly wave is expected to approach the upper parts of the country by July 6. Under these evolving meteorological conditions, widespread rain, wind, and thunderstorms are forecast in multiple regions, particularly from July 5 to July 10.

Regions Expected to Be Affected

In Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, scattered thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rainfall are forecast across areas including Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Swat, Kohat, Bannu, Abbottabad, Mansehra, and Hunza. In Gilgit-Baltistan, districts such as Skardu, Gilgit, and Diamir will experience rain from July 6 to July 10 with intermittent gaps.

Punjab, including Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Gujrat, and surrounding districts, will see thunderstorms with heavy rainfall from July 5 to July 10. South Punjab districts like Bahawalpur, D.G. Khan, Multan, and Layyah are expected to receive rainfall from July 6 to July 8.

In Balochistan, isolated heavy rainfall is forecast from July 4 to July 8 in regions such as Loralai, Zhob, Barkhan, Kalat, and Khuzdar. In Sindh, light to moderate rainfall is expected from July 4 to July 8, affecting Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, and other major urban centers. Isolated heavy falls may occur in parts of Southeastern and Lower Sindh.

The PMD has warned of serious consequences, especially in vulnerable and hilly regions:

Advisory on Possible Impacts

  • Flash floods in local streams and nullahs in Murree, Galiyat, Mansehra, Swat, Buner, Shangla, and parts of Balochistan.
  • Urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad.
  • Landslides and mudslides in hilly areas of KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and northern Punjab.
  • Strong winds and lightning may damage weak structures such as billboards, electric poles, rooftops, and solar panels.
  • Disruptions to transport and tourism, especially in mountainous regions, are likely.

Farmers have been urged to adjust agricultural activities in line with the weather forecast. Meanwhile, the general public, travelers, and tourists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas and remain alert to changing weather conditions.

The PMD has directed all concerned authorities to stay on high alert and take proactive measures to prevent any loss of life or property.
