Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced on Tuesday that the provincial government is working to unify ride-hailing services in Karachi under a single, integrated system. The move aims to provide passengers with safe, standardized, and legal transportation options across the city.

“We are working to bring the [online] taxi system in Karachi under one umbrella in an integrated and modern manner,” Memon said while chairing a meeting of the transport department, according to a press release issued by his spokesperson.

The integration will include popular online taxi services such as Careem and Yango, which will be brought under one regulatory framework, said Memon’s spokesperson Husain Mansoor.

The meeting was attended by key officials including Special Assistant to the Sindh Chief Minister on Investment and Public-Private Partnership Qasim Naveed Qamar, Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, and Sindh Mass Transit Authority Managing Director Kamal Dayo.

Memon emphasized that providing quality, safe, and environmentally friendly travel options to Karachi’s citizens is a top priority. He also highlighted plans to introduce an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in the city, which is expected to enhance the taxi system while significantly reducing environmental pollution.

The transport department is exploring various models to offer EV taxis to the public on easy installment plans, the press release added.

In addition, Memon updated progress on the Sindh government’s initiative to provide pink electric scooters to women free of cost, aimed at improving women’s mobility in the city.

On the public transport front, Memon announced that double-decker buses will arrive in Karachi by June, with a large batch of new buses expected by late June or early July. The upcoming financial year’s budget will prioritize allocating maximum funds for the purchase of new buses to improve commuter services.
