The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has fallen significantly short of its revenue collection target for the first six months of the current fiscal year (FY25), with a shortfall of Rs. 386 billion, according to provisional figures released on Tuesday.

The FBR managed to collect Rs. 5,623 billion during the July-December period, falling short of the assigned target of Rs. 6,009 billion for the same period. The shortfall raises concerns about the government’s ambitious tax collection goals for the fiscal year.

In December 2024 alone, the FBR collected Rs. 1,326 billion against a target of Rs. 1,373 billion, resulting in a monthly gap of Rs. 47 billion. The December figures highlight the ongoing struggle to meet revenue targets despite efforts to enhance tax collection.

The government had set an ambitious tax collection target of Rs. 12,913 billion for FY25, representing a 40% increase from the previous fiscal year (FY24). However, the significant shortfall in the first half of the year has cast doubt on the feasibility of achieving this goal.
