In a bid to address frequent internet disruptions in Pakistan, the Ministry of IT is working on a comprehensive policy framework to guarantee uninterrupted internet services for IT parks, software houses, Special Technology Zones, incubation centers, and data call centers. The initiative aims to protect the IT industry from the adverse effects of connectivity issues and sustain the growth of IT exports.
According to reports, the Ministry of IT plans to collaborate with key stakeholders, including the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), to finalize the policy. The proposed framework will ensure that IT parks and data centers are exempt from internet shutdowns, allowing them to maintain seamless connectivity even during disruptions. This measure is expected to enable uninterrupted operations for these critical hubs.
The move comes in response to repeated internet outages this year, which have severely impacted the IT sector’s operations. Industry representatives, including the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA), have raised concerns with the Ministry of IT and PTA, urging the government to prioritize reliable internet connectivity for the sector. In response, PTA has established a dedicated cell to address complaints from the IT industry and provide technical support for implementing the new policy.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the Ministry of IT to ensure that internet disruptions do not affect IT parks, call centers, or incubation centers.
Once implemented, the policy will safeguard these vital sectors, enabling them to maintain productivity and avoid financial losses during periods of slow or interrupted internet. This initiative is expected to provide significant relief to software houses, call centers, and other technology hubs, ensuring their continued contribution to the country’s economy.
