On Monday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the completion of Gwadar International Airport, highlighting it as a testament to the Chinese leadership’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s economic development, particularly in its underdeveloped regions. The virtual inauguration ceremony underscored the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China.
Prime Minister Sharif expressed optimism that the new international airport would significantly boost Gwadar’s economy and contribute to Pakistan’s overall economic growth. Both Prime Minister Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Qiang participated in unveiling the airport’s plaque, with the ceremony attended by members of both countries’ delegations, ministers, military leaders, and senior officials.
During the event, Prime Minister Sharif noted the signing and exchange of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between the two nations in various sectors, including industry, commerce, and agriculture. He expressed confidence that these MoUs would soon evolve into formal agreements, further strengthening bilateral ties. He thanked Premier Li for his visit, which he viewed as a commitment to fostering the friendship between Pakistan and China.
The prime minister also extended gratitude to President Xi Jinping, Premier Li, and the Chinese people for their generous contribution to Gwadar International Airport, describing it as a significant addition to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He assured his Chinese counterpart of Pakistan’s dedication to completing the second phase of CPEC and ensuring the security and prosperity of both nations.
Prime Minister Sharif praised the relentless efforts of Chinese and Pakistani engineers and workers in constructing the world-class airport, which he described as another gift from China.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang congratulated the Pakistani government and people on the airport’s completion, acknowledging it as a symbol of the strong collaboration between Chinese and Pakistani engineers and workers. He emphasized the project’s role in enhancing regional connectivity and promoting shipping and port activities, reflecting the strength of the Pak-China friendship.
Premier Li highlighted CPEC’s positive impact on Pakistan’s economic and social development and regional integration, attributing these achievements to the consistent efforts of both countries. He assured continued cooperation with Pakistan to pursue high standards, sustainability, and quality under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Referring to the Pak-China relationship as a “special relationship and friendship,” Premier Li described it as an all-weather strategic partnership that has withstood global changes. He reiterated his commitment to working closely with Pakistan to accelerate mutual economic development in the future.
